To set up a Google Business Profile in Oman or Saudi Arabia, go to business.google.com/add, select "Add your business to Google", enter your real-world business name, primary category, map location or service areas, phone and website, then complete whichever verification Google offers you: video, phone or text, email, or a live video call. Reviews take up to 5 business days. After that, your Maps ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence, and it cannot be bought.

Why your Google Business Profile matters more than your Instagram
When someone in Muscat types "salon near me" or someone in Riyadh searches "car wash Al Malqa", the first thing they see is the map pack, not your posts. Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is what shows there: name, rating, photos, hours, call button and directions.
The profile is free. What costs you is getting it wrong: a keyword-stuffed name that gets suspended, a pin in the wrong place, or a category that doesn't describe you.
This guide follows Google's official Business Profile Help pages as of October 2026. Google renames buttons from time to time; follow the meaning if a label differs slightly.
Before you start
- A Google account owned by the business, not a staff member's personal email.
- Your business name exactly as on your signage and invoices.
- Precise address and the map location of your door.
- A phone number the business controls (+968 in Oman, +966 in Saudi Arabia).
- Your website URL, if you have one.
- Regular hours, plus Ramadan and Eid hours.
- Real photos: storefront, interior, products, team at work.
How to create a Google Business Profile, step by step
Per Google's help page:
- Go to
business.google.com/add. - Select "Add your business to Google".
- Follow the on-screen steps: name, category, whether customers visit you or you travel to them.
- Choose an available verification option and complete it.
Claim an existing listing instead of duplicating it
Your shop may already be on Google Maps. Open Maps, search your name and city, select Claim this business, then Manage now. If the listing shown isn't yours, choose "I own or manage another business". If someone else (an ex-employee or a former agency) has already verified it, request ownership from the current owner.
Verification: methods and what to film
Per Google's verification help, you can't choose the method. Google decides based on business type, public information, region and hours, and may ask for more than one.
| Method | How it works | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or text | Code sent to the business number | IVR systems can't receive it |
| Steps sent to an address you can access | — | |
| Video recording | Film your location, business and proof you manage it | Google recommends it if you're eligible |
| Live video call | A support rep guides you | Only during your area's business hours |
| Postcard | 5-digit code mailed to your address | Expires after 30 days; don't edit name, address or category meanwhile |
For video, show three things: your location (outside signage, neighbouring shops or a street sign), your business (products, branded equipment, tools you serve customers with), and proof you manage it (staff-only areas, the till, kitchen or storeroom, non-sensitive documents, or keys that open the premises). Reviews take up to 5 business days, rarely longer.
Addresses in Oman and Saudi Arabia
Oman
- Put the pin on your door, not in the middle of the neighbourhood. That matters more than how you word the address.
- Write the address the way locals know it: building or complex, street if any, area, wilayat, governorate.
- Where there's no street address, Google offers Plus Codes, short codes derived from coordinates.
- Use the same name and address format on your website, Instagram and WhatsApp Business.
Saudi Arabia
- Use your National Address everywhere. The Transport General Authority requires parcel carriers to reject shipments without a valid National Address from January 2026, so it is already the format your customers and couriers use. You can find it in Absher, Tawakkalna, Sehhaty or SPL.
Service-area businesses
Mobile car wash, home maintenance, event photography: if you go to customers, Google's guidelines say to hide your address and set service areas instead.
The rules that get profiles suspended
From Google's guidelines for representing your business:
- Name as on your signage only. No "Best Mandi in Muscat", no phone numbers, hours or service descriptions. Google states that unnecessary information in the name isn't permitted.
- No PO boxes or virtual offices.
- One profile per location.
- A number the business controls, ideally local, never premium-rate.
- Categories say what the business is, not what it has. As few and as specific as possible.
Fill in the profile: field by field
Edit from Google Search with Edit profile then Save, or in the Google Maps app from the Business tab (help). Google reviews edits before they go live.
| Field | What to enter | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | The most precise description | Up to 9 additional; don't overdo it |
| Description | What you offer, for whom, where | Max 750 characters; no URLs, HTML or promotions |
| Hours | Real hours | Use special hours for Ramadan, Eid and national days |
| Phone | Business number | Up to 2 additional numbers |
| Website | Full URL with https:// | For multiple branches, link the branch page |
| Social links | One per platform | Instagram, TikTok and others |
| Photos and video | Storefront, interior, products | Real photos, not stock |
| Products, services or menu | What you actually sell | The full menu, not just "popular items" |
Note that Google removed chat and call history from Business Profiles on 31 July 2024 (help). Route people to WhatsApp through your website and social links.

How to rank higher on Google Maps
Google's local ranking page names three factors:
| Factor | Meaning | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches the search | Precise category, clear description, complete services |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher | Can't control it, but an accurate pin prevents errors |
| Prominence | How well known you are, including links and reviews | Genuine reviews, replies, and a website that names your business and address |
Google also states: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Anyone promising "number one on Maps in a week" is promising something they don't control.
Reviews: allowed and banned
Under Google Maps content policy, you may ask customers for genuine reviews. You may not pay for reviews or offer discounts for them, ask only happy customers, discourage negative reviews, post from multiple accounts, or set review quotas for staff. Reply to every review, good or bad.
Track performance monthly
Google keeps tracking engagement on your profile, including website traffic and direction requests, and calls still reach your number (help). Each month check calls from the profile, direction requests (the closest signal to a store visit), website clicks, new reviews and average rating, and photos added by customers. If something drops suddenly, check first whether hours changed, someone edited the name or category, or a duplicate listing appeared.
Copy-ready checklist
- Name matches signage, nothing added.
- Precise primary category, few extras.
- Pin on your door.
- Same address format on website, Instagram and WhatsApp.
- Business phone and https website.
- Description under 750 characters, no links or prices.
- Regular hours plus Ramadan and Eid special hours.
- At least 10 real photos, refreshed monthly.
- Products, services or menu complete.
- Review link ready to send after each sale.
- Replies to every review within days.
- At least two owners from inside the business.
Common mistakes
- Profile owned by an employee or former agency.
- Two profiles for one shop.
- Keyword-stuffed names.
- Wrong hours in Ramadan, followed by angry reviews.
- Stock photos.
- No website, which leaves prominence on the table.
